how to build-self-confidence

We’re back with our next topic in our Deep Beauty series! Today we’re going to tackle the topic on how to improve your self confidence. This topic is really close to my heart because I suffered from low self esteem for so, so long. It’s funny because people will tell me all the time that I’ve always seemed super confident and outgoing but you can never tell what’s going on with someone from the outside. It wasn’t until I started working on myself on the inside that my self perception started to change.

That is really what it’s all about. Self perception. That is always the most overlooked thing. People like to wait for this big change to happen magically like when they lose 30 lbs, when their skin clears up, when they make more money, etc that they’ll be happy and confident. The thing is yes, those things can happen and you can be happy as a result, but until you make loving yourself a priority and make that shift in your mind, those successes will result in only temporary happiness. Guess what happens when the phase passes? You end up returning to old habits and your self esteem slowly starts to go back down again.

So how do you break this cycle exactly? Simple. You have to pay attention to the language you use.

Love yourself quote

This is the key to gaining confidence which is so often overlooked because it’s not a quick fix. You can’t put it in a pill, slap a Kardashian on the label and put it on a store shelf. No corporation is going to make a boat load of money off of it. It’s simply a very unsexy answer to your problems. But it’s the most effective solution you are going to find to building your confidence.

Ok so what do I mean exactly by paying attention to your language? It’s watching the messages you are telling yourself about literally every single thing in life. We all have an internal dialogue that runs through our minds all day every day. The words we use and the way we perceive a situation dictates how we feel about it. We can chose to look at things from a positive perspective or we can look at it from a negative one.

Guess what negativity does? Brings you down. Makes you doubt your self worth and keeps your confidence at the lowest level possible. All it takes is a shift in your thinking from negative to positive to increase your self love which will send your confidence soaring.

Here’s an example of what I mean:

Situation: You go to your boss with an idea. Your boss is uninterested and dismissive.

Negative self-talk: My boss hates me. My ideas suck. I’m never going to get a better job. I’ll always be stuck in this position forever. My life sucks, I wish I was smarter, etc.

Positive self-talk: She must be having a bad day. I’ll talk to her about it another day. I wonder how I could improve my idea and my pitch. Maybe I could put together a few alternates. Ya, that’s a great idea! I’m going to look up some more ideas that she’ll definitely love!

Do you see the difference between the two? The first one stops you in your tracks wheres as the second one promotes self growth and brings about excitement inside you. Excited people don’t have time to feel down about themselves, they’re way too busy making their lives better.

So here’s your homework: I want you all to focus all your attention this week on your thoughts. Practice changing the negative ones to positive messages and really, really concentrate on this. You will see a huge change in just a few days. If you need to, write it down in a journal, that definitely helps. I love journals. They’re a great way to reflect.

What do you think? Do you have any suggestions or your own personal experiences you want to share? I’d love to hear your stories!

Time Saving Makeup ideas

Time saving makeup ideas

One of the biggest reasons why a lot of women don’t bother with makeup is the time it takes to put it on. That’s what I hear anyways. I can understand that, I mean I can just see the crazy household morning rush with three kids to feed, dress and get out the door, not to mention the dog that won’t stop barking and knocking things over and then the milk spilled on your business suit and the toast is burnt and your husband is standing in the corner watching some lame prank video, completely oblivious to it all. Ok maybe I can’t fully understand it, but I can empathize.

So what I decided to do was to put together a list of time saving makeup ideas that could help you look and feel your best before you face your day. After all that’s what 2016 is all about right?! All you need is 5 minutes. Just 5 minutes and you can do sooo much with your look, I promise.

Hack 1.

Simplify your routine. Ok admittedly you’re gonna need a little time on a weekend to go through all your stuff and weed out the things you know you’re never gonna use. You don’t have to trash it or donate it just yet, all I want you to do is pick 1 thing from each category below and keep that aside for your daily routine. If you don’t have all the items, get your butt to a MAC or Sephora asap.

Here’s your checklist:

Everyday makeup checklist

Hack 2.

Keep said items in a spot that is easily accessible, clean and organized. Always put your items back in that spot, and don’t put anything else there. I mean it. Nothing else. Not even in a pinch.

Hack 3.

Follow the routine listed below. Every. Single. Day.

Makeup application order

Hack 4.

Invest in your tools & keep on top of replacing used items. I can’t stress enough how much using the proper brush will affect your final look. You’ll need a concealer brush, powder brush and blush brush for sure. Those are your basic minimums. PLEASE remember to replace your mascara every 2 months. We don’t like bacteria in and/or around our eyes. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

Hack 5.

Know when to play with your makeup. The best time to try different colors/products/techniques is after the kids are asleep and you’ve had a glass of wine (not quite 2, we’re not trying to lose an eye here) and are going to wash your face. Why’s this the best time? Cause you can make all the mistakes you want and no one will have to see it, silly!

Ok so let’s all make a pact that we’re going to revamp our makeup routines and get a pretty, everyday look going. If you want to see mine, here’s the video I did breaking it all down. Now I don’t have kids a dog or a hubby so I can take 10 minutes, but I promise when I need to simplify I can get it down to 5.

The most Important step to Improving your Self Image

Thursday, January 21, 2016 0 0

Gratitude

So we’ve talked about how taking care of the outside can improve how we feel on the inside, and we’ve figured out how to nail down your new look, but what else is necessary in improving your self image?

It’s really simple actually and I want us all to do this together starting today.

Cultivating an attitude of gratitude is the single most important step when it comes to improving self image, confidence, happiness and your overall contentment in life. Not to mention that happy people are more likely to look for and stick to ways to improve all of the other areas of their life.

So here’s your homework assignment:

I want you to write down 3 things that you are grateful for every night before you go to bed. If you want you can tweet them to me, having someone to be accountable to ensures that you will stick to it.

Now here’s the really important part:

For the first 2 weeks I want you to just focus on your physical looks.

This is really important if you are suffering from body dysmorphia. I want you to stand in front of the mirror and find something, anything you like. If you don’t think you can find something, trust me you can. Even if it’s something like you like how long your eyelashes are. That’s something.

What this does is takes away from the negative messages we repeat to ourselves (my thighs are too big, my nose is crooked) and replaces it with positive messages. The goal is to flood ourselves with so many positive thoughts that we drown out the negative.

Ok who’s with me? I’m starting today :)

How to Create your Signature Look

Signature-look

On a previous post I had discussed how putting a little effort on the outside helps boost your self confidence on the inside. The biggest reason a lot of people don’t bother is because of the time it takes. I can completely understand that, there have been days where I don’t want to be bothered either but I know I’ll end up feeling low energy and it’ll throw my day off a bit. So I’ve had to figure out a way around this and the best thing I’ve come up with is to create your signature look.

So how does this help exactly? If you know what your look is, it cuts a TON of time and effort out of the whole getting ready process. Trust me, there’s a reason why in most of my pics I’m wearing MAC Please Me lipstick. I know it works for me so I don’t have to think about it. One less decision to make might seem like a minute thing, but having a bunch of less decisions to make saves a lot of time and mental energy.

Ok so now we know why we’re doing what we’re doing, now how do you figure out what your signature look is? I’ve got it all down to a few steps for you:

How-to-create-your-signature-look

Get online and start going through images of makeup, hair and fashion. I’d suggest sticking to one category at a time so as to not feel overwhelmed by the process. Start collecting these images so you can sort through them later.

Once you have them all collected go through and start eliminating the ones you know for sure aren’t you. Like you might see an image of an actress with a gorgeous red lip, but you know deep down inside you would never wear that, so delete the image. Keep in mind you’re looking for your every day look so you have to be comfortable wearing it every single day.

Once you have the makeup, hair and fashion pics, get to the mall and try things on. You won’t know how it looks on you until you try it on, certain colors/products will suit you, some won’t.

Invest in key items!! This will save you a bunch of time and a lot of headache. Items such as a good blow dryer, waving wand, makeup brushes, a great jacket, good boots. These will make a world of difference in how polished your final look is.

Nail down a routine for your application (i.e. concealer, then powder, then brows, then mascara) and stick with this. I can’t tell you how much time this saves.

Organize your products keeping only the minimum ones you’ll use in your everyday routine accessible and keep everything in the same place. People are always telling me how organized I am but I’ll let you in on a little secret- I am incredibly impatient. So the less time I have to spend looking for something, the better.

One last tip- for your fashion, invest in pieces that you are super comfortable in and flatter your shape. If you don’t love it, do NOT BUY IT!!! Trust me if you aren’t insanely in love with it, it’ll sit in your closet and you’ll always feel like you have nothing to wear.

What do you think? Do you have any tips you’d add to this list? Please let me know if this helps!

What Deep Beauty means..

Deep Beauty

So what does deep beauty mean..Ok so I’m gonna admit, this is probably one of the scariest posts I’m putting up but I think it’s really, really important that we get real for a second here. I love that a lot of you look at me for inspiration and see the makeup and the positivity and it can seem like I’ve got it all together, but I’m here to tell you that I don’t have it together all the time. I get lost in negativity, feel down on myself sometimes and a lot of the times I compare myself to other, smarter, prettier girls that seem to have it all figured out. I’m human.

I’ve never really, truly talked to you guys before about my struggles before but I have suffered from low self esteem/confidence issues for most of my life for reasons that range from growing up in a city where I didn’t look like 95% of the people around me, to struggling with body image issues, to reasons I’d like to keep private (maybe one day I’ll talk about it). The thing is what I love more than anything else in this world is helping you. There’s nothing more rewarding than the feedback I get when you learnt something new I taught you in a tutorial or you were moved by something inspirational I posted.

So I realized that the only way to truly help is to get super real with you guys because how can I help you live your most beautiful life if you don’t know how to get from where you are to where you want to be? Cause it’s not just about contouring your face, throwing on some brows and believing in yourself, there’s wayyy more to it than that, way, way more and I want to cut through all the bullsh!t (sorry mom) and really help.

So what exactly does deep beauty mean? It means taking that first step towards loving yourself. For me that started with the outside. That is something we can easily control. I am in love with the way that beauty & fashion can transform. Learning the techniques you need to make the most of your features from makeup to hair and fashion. I know some people might think it comes off as vain, but you can not deny that when you look good on the outside, you feel better on the inside. It’s 2016. Beauty and fashion aren’t going anywhere.

That’s not all of it though. There has to be the work that is done on the inside so that when you do strip all of that away you still feel good. That’s what 2016 is all about. Learning to fall in love with yourself and living a deeply beautiful life and I want to help as much as I can. So let’s go on this journey together. I’ll post tips and let you know where I’m at so we can all look back on Dec 31st, 2016 and be proud of how far we’ve come :)

xo,

Deeps
