I first met Holistic nutritionist Joy McCarthy 2 years ago when I decided I wanted learn more about health & nutrition. Surprisingly enough it was her Twitter account that led me to her as one day I read her tweet about the one-on-one sessions that she conducts. It came to me at the perfect time, I was sooo majorly addicted to junk food! I was working at MAC at the time and if you’ve ever worked retail in your life, you’ll know how up and down your schedule can be and how enticing the food court can be! My meals were basically fast food for breakfast, lunch & dinner. With the occasional home cooked meal if I was actually home. I remember the look on Joy’s face when I brought her my food journal for the 1st time. Lol. Well needless to say, with her help I have come a longgg way. I wouldn’t dream of doing a detox before I met her, and now I’m on day 5!
Joy has come a long way too! I love watching her on the Global Morning show and her career just keeps growing bigger and bigger. Joy you deserve all this success because what you do truly affects people where it counts- their health.
Here is an interview I did with Joy on her views on Inner vs Outer beauty-
What does “beauty” mean to you?
Beauty is a feeling of confidence, happiness and health. To me, it really has nothing to do with outward appearance and has everything to do with your inner glow because when you glow on the inside, this is automatically reflected on your outside.
What have you done to improve your self image over the years?
I was not very comfortable with my appearance in my early 20’s, so I read pretty much every self-help book ever written! However, what actually made a difference was focusing on how I felt, rather than how I looked. I felt good by eating nourishing “whole” foods instead of low-fat, low-cal, low-carb. And I actually decreased my intense physical activity and focused more on yoga. I feel more comfortable in my own skin than every before.
What do you do in your daily life to amplify your inner beauty?
Surround myself with positive loving people who I admire, who challenge and inspire me and vice versa. This makes me feel amazing from the inside out. And of course, eating nourishing foods that love me back and don’t leave me bloated and irritable because food can do this!
How do you feel about the constant barrage of images of “perfect” models that women are presented with everyday?
It is unfortunate that so many young women compare themselves to a photoshopped state of perfection. Several years ago I decided to do a celebrity magazine detox. It was one of the best decisions I ever made! And I never compare myself to these images, because I’m beautiful in my own joyous way and I don’t want to look like anyone but me. However, when you constantly look at those magazines, it really beats up your self-image, so I avoid them. I can appreciate beauty, but beauty is so much more to me than a model-like beauty.
As a holistic nutritionist, what do you think are some important things we can do for ourselves that will connect our inner and outer beauty?
Eat energizing, nourishing whole foods that don’t zap your body of energy and vitality. Engage in meaningful conversations that feed your soul, avoid gossip and of course, get yourself out in nature every single day!
We know how you love your natural products! What are your fav all natural makeup items?
I LOVE Eminence mineral based blush, Martina Gerbhert Rose cream (it’s like slathering butter on your face) and I’m a lip gloss fanatic. I love Green Beaver’s new line of lip glosses.
