It might seem a little daunting, trying to figure out what shade of red lip to wear with your red clothing and I think most people just avoid it overall cause they’re unsure if it’s a faux pas to begin with. Well I say throw out the rule book! Who’s to say what you should or shouldn’t do, like I’ve said many times before, makeup is art and therefore subjective. You can absolutely wear red on red and I have some tips you can follow to make the look a little more foolproof.
A few months back I exhibited my jewelry at the 2nd Anniversary fashion show for fab designer Natasha Sakhuja. I opted to wear a red blazer with red lips. The key is to keep everything else simple and neutral and for the reds to have the same tone.
The shadows I used were very soft and served as a back drop to the liquid liner and multiple coats of mascara. The lipstick I used was Russian Red from MAC, and closely matched the red blazer from Zara. The reds don’t have to be matching exactly, you can vary the intensity by wearing a sheer gloss with a bold red dress and vice versa. Just try to keep the tones similar (cool with cool, warm with warm).
The old rule of bold eye or bold lip, never both worn together, is a thing of the past. If you want to do both at the same time, I would choose one feature to be the stronger of the two. So a soft smokey eye with a bold red lip, or a dark lid with a sheer colorful gloss.
I love Natasha’s style, very modern but deep rooted in Indian culture, which is the same feel I was going for when designing my jewelry line. The models looked gorgeous in Natasha’s designs and were wearing my jewelry on the runway!
Natasha is wearing my black & gold cuff. All of the jewelry is available for purchase here.

Would you wear the two together?

Very cool video indeed. I really like the Russian Red lipstick. It’s an amazing coral red color. You really have the cosmopolitan style that I like. By the way I have an query. I can’t seem to wear eyeliner anymore because every time I do there are smudges underneath my eye. It happens all the time. Any tips on how to prevent it?. Thanks.

Thank you Leena! I totally understand about the liner, I’ve had to experiment over the years to find something that works. Have you tried a waterproof eyeliner? That should do the trick. Or try using an eyeshadow as your eyeliner. Because it’s a powder it has less chance of melting and smudging under your eye. Everyone is different so what might work for one person won’t for another, you just have to try different things until you find what works for you.
