Exfoliating is an extremely important part of your skincare routine. What it does is sloughs off the surface layer of dead skin cells on your face. This allows your moisturizer to penetrate your skin and work effectively. There are ones that work mechanically by using a grainy substance to remove the dead skin cells or you can use a chemical based one. I prefer a mechanical one myself, and usually use the Microfine Refinisher by MAC.
